Introduction

From 2003 to 2007, the Industrial Development Bureau of the Ministry of Economic Affairs began promoting the "Digital Learning Industry Promotion and Development Plan" (Phase 1). Our department was established in 2004 in response to the national trend of digital industry development. Therefore, in addition to aligning with the university’s development goals, the department also observes national professional development trends and sets its development direction as actively cultivating talent for the digital content industry to support the national "Digital Industry Development Plan."

Subsequently, from 2008, the Ministry of Economic Affairs promoted the second five-year plan. The "Digital Content Industry Promotion Office" was officially inaugurated on September 29, 2009. The Executive Yuan has designated digital content industry development as a key flagship plan under the cultural and creative industries, one of the six emerging industries. In August 2009, the Executive Yuan approved the "Digital Publishing Industry Development Strategy and Action Plan" to promote Taiwan as a global hub for digital publishing. To date, the "Cultural and Creative Industry Development Plan – Digital Content Industry Flagship Program" continues to expand the digital content industry, covering content, hardware, software, and application services.

In 2020, the National Development Council's "Six Core Strategic Industry Promotion Plan" included information and digital industries, cybersecurity, precision health, green and renewable energy industries, and more, highlighting the importance of the information and digital sectors. Today, in response to technological progress, the nation embraces the digital era, integrating smart technologies to enhance the value of digital public services, such as the Service-Oriented Smart Government 2.0 initiative and innovative digital policies promoted by the Digital Development Department. Our department’s three main curriculum axes—"Digital Video Design," "Digital Game Design," and "Digital Value-Added Design"—are designed to meet social and industrial demands, defining the primary teaching and research directions as follows:

(4) Department Development and Its Connection to Future Industries

1. Connection between the Multimedia Industry and Emerging Technologies

The department has been committed to integrating digital media technologies and developing digital content, aiming to cultivate talents with humanities literacy, aesthetics, art, and media technology integration skills. With continuous advancements in motion-sensing technology, we leverage VR, AR, and other immersive interaction technologies to bring more possibilities to daily life. The gaming industry utilizes these new technologies to further advance the industry, while local tourism industries aim to offer more convenient and immersive experiences, innovating traditional business models.

Looking ahead, the combination of AR (Augmented Reality), VR (Virtual Reality), and MR (Mixed Reality) technologies will create limitless possibilities. Immersive interactive experiences enhance product added value, which will be a key direction for the multimedia industry. To meet this trend, the department continues to offer courses in "Digital Video Design," "Digital Game Design," and "Digital Value-added Design" to cultivate students’ professional abilities. In addition, since 2018, we established the "MRRTC Mixed Reality Research & Teaching Center" to continuously strengthen core competency development as technology advances.

2. Integration of Industry-Academia Collaboration into Professional Courses

Our university is committed to establishing an efficient research and development system to promote research and development of fundamental and applied technologies needed by industries. We actively seek and utilize various resources to conduct systematic and integrated academic research and innovative technology development. Through collaboration with enterprises, we provide students with summer internships, successfully cultivating talents required by the digital content industry while enhancing students’ humanities literacy to align with global trends.

3. Connection Between the Multimedia Industry and Social Practice

Our university is located in Yunlin, and we aim to integrate local characteristics, traditional culture, and industries (such as glove puppetry and sugar factories) with data digitization and digital archiving design. These value-added applications are intended for the education and entertainment industries, developing the department's unique strengths while contributing to the local community. Additionally, we provide marketing planning services for primary local industries, including product packaging, logo design, business card design, and planning for tourism factories, creating works that combine Yunlin’s traditional culture with local特色. Moreover, collaboration with industry partners in certification courses not only enhances student competitiveness but also establishes recognition and authority in the central Taiwan region.

The department combines practical project-based courses and plans future collaborations with the industry to help students familiarize themselves with their future working environment. Students are encouraged to participate in national and international competitions to enhance their skills, fostering their integration and teamwork abilities across design, creativity, and management. The educational goals of the university, college, and department are summarized in the figure below, showing the connection between the talent cultivation objectives at each level.
